dyno_drabbles runnerup

Here is my drabble.  I'm married to an identical twin, and this drabble is loosely based on real life.  Con crit and comments gratefully received.  The prompt for this drabble can be seen here.

TITLE: Love Is the Most Extraordinary Magic
RATING: G
WARNING: Not DH-compliant
WORD COUNT: 291
A/N: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] morethansirius  for betaing.  Mrs. Weasley realizes the extraordinary power of love.

Fred Weasley, one of the most inventive of modern wizards, was engaged to Hermione Granger, the brightest witch of her age. This extraordinary pairing came as a surprise — even to the Weasley family. Mrs. Weasley, although happy to have Hermione as a daughter-in-law, thought that Ron would have been a better choice.

Mrs. Weasley brought the photo album of the twins’ baby pictures to the table. “Fred and George looked so much alike as babies that we placed a non-permanent tattoo charm on Fred’s foot to tell them apart. It wore off once, and we had to have a family conference to decide which baby was which.” She smiled fondly in remembrance.

Fred leaned over the back of Hermione’s chair and spoke into her ear, “Maybe you’re really engaged to George and not Fred.”

Hermione shivered in response to Fred’s smooth voice in her ear. Turning to kiss him, she replied, “As long as I’m engaged to you, I don’t care what your name is.”

Mrs. Weasley said, “I had five boys at the time I was putting this album together, so most of the pictures aren’t labelled. I’ll tell you which baby is Fred.”

Hermione looked at the pictures on the first page. “I can pick him out in some of these pictures. Look, he had that grin — even before he had all his teeth. George smiles; Fred grins.”

Fred grinned as his mum looked slightly dumbfounded. Hermione turned another page. “Oh, there’s that quirk to his eyebrow. And this picture shows how his left dimple was already deeper than his right. What a cutie!”

Not many outside the immediate family could distinguish the twins’ differences. Molly looked at Hermione and Fred thoughtfully, mind suddenly opened to the extraordinary possibilities.

That is fun and lovely! And what a dynamic pair they'd make!

Thank you! They really are a fun pair to write and read.

Thanks!

I've read some other Fred/Hermione stories, and they really are a fun couple. More realistic than Ron/Hermione in my opinion.

That was really sweet. The pairing is one I haven't seen before.

Thanks. It's a fairly rare pairing, but dearly loved by some. It's a fun pairing to work with.

Congrats, yours was my favorite. Glad you placed.

I had no idea you were married to a twin, that's sweet being able to see the subtle differences that the rest of the world overlooks. :)

[identity profile] m-mcgonagall-65.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

Noticing the subtle differences is sort of a necessity when you're marrying an identical twin--especially if they like to pull pranks. :)

That was sweet. She knows him better than his mother does. Oops, that goes without saying. *blushes*

[identity profile] m-mcgonagall-65.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. *grins* It's amazing how you pick up on the small differences.

Snicker! I love the way she can pick him out, even from old old photographs.

Cute icon!

Thanks! I think Hermione would want to make sure she knew which twin was which. ;)

The icon was made for me by [livejournal.com profile] alwaysjbj for my Hermione/George fic. I quite agree with you that Hermione would want to be absolutely certain.

I'll have to read that sometime. Do you have a thought as to why there seem to be more Hermione/Fred fics than Hermione/George ones? I wonder why people feel that Fred might be a better match for Hermione than George, particularly as Fred is the one that ends up dead.

[identity profile] talesofsnape.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I had thought this was one of the things that [livejournal.com profile] bambu345 and I might have covered in our comment threads, but I got about two thirds of the way through checking before our Monday nighters turned up and I didn't manage to find more than a brief comment, so (since it looks like there will be actual thought involved) I'll give you a proper answer tomorrow, when I'll hopefully be a bit less sleepy.

There's always been more Fred fic than George fic even back before DH. I think the fact that the trend has continued has much the same reasoning behind it as the fact that we Snape fans continue to write Snape fic. We don't like what JKR did with the character, so we simply ignore it.

As to why there's always been more Fred fic?

I know that before I actually began to write HP fic I tended to almost regard Fred and George as a combined entity rather than two separate characters. You never really saw one without the other, and in almost all of their scenes in the books, it's Fred who will start a conversation with George chimimg in. Whether this was deliberate on JKR's part, or whether it was a case of, 'Oh the twins will come in and say this', which then became Fred said x, George says y, I don't know, but it means when you come to analyse their actions in detail, Fred comes off as the pro-active one of the two. We know Fred asks Angelina to the Yule Ball. George doesn't get a mention. Is it an oversight? Or is George just not that interested in girls or too shy to do anything about it?

Personally, what made me choose George, was that when I had the idea for what became a series of ficlets, it was because of the potential I saw to follow up from a particular canon scene. In the canon scene I followed on from, George is said to appear gratified by a compliment from Hermione, whereas Fred is busy talking to other people. Hence in Fireworks, Hermione ended up with George.

Had I kicked off from later in canon, in HBP when the trio visit WWW, it's Fred who notices Hermione's black eye, and fixes her up with the bruise salve, Fred who gives her the Daydream Charm...

But the prevalence of Fred fic seems to go back even before HBP, so I'm going to fall back on the fact that whenever we talk about the twins by name, it's always Fred and George. Fred simply always gets top billing. We never talk about George and Fred, and I think somehow that just sank into people's subconscious.

Just my thoughts, of course, I don't actually know any better than you do.

Thanks for your detailed analysis. What you're saying makes a lot of sense.
